Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

You've probably heard about it but what do you actually know about it? Read on for more information...

The Model

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) looks at how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours link together to cause and maintain the difficulties you experience. By making subtle changes in the way that you view things and respond to things, CBT has been proven to be just as effective as medication in helping you to reclaim your life.

Skills

CBT is a skills-based therapy. Whilst it is important to understand why and how you are feeling this way, CBT looks primarily at the symptoms you are experiencing on a day-to-day basis. Together, with your therapist, you will develop a set of skills to manage and overcome the difficulties you are facing.

Collaborative

CBT is not a therapy that is done to you but a collaborative process that requires your active participation. There will be an emphasis upon you to practice the skills you have learned within treatment outside of session and to record your experience to review with your therapist.

Goals

At the outset of treatment, you will agree on a therapy goal with your therapist. The treatment plan will be centred on helping you to achieve this goal. It may be helpful for you to begin thinking about what you'd like to achieve within treatment prior to your initial assessment.
