Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions we get...

Does CBT actually work?

The evidence base for CBT is extremely strong. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), whom recommend treatments for the NHS to offer, say that CBT should be the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety in the UK.

Does EMDR work?

EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, OCD, Anxiety Disorders, and Depression. It is a NICE recommended treatment, and has been tested in dozens of randomised clinical trials.

What does CBT help with?

CBT has been proven to be effective for a number of common mental health difficulties, including: Depression; Panic Disorder; Social Anxiety Disorder; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder; Health Anxiety Disorder; and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

What does EMDR help with?

Originally, EMDR was used to treat PTSD, but has since been proven to be effective for other disorders, such as Depression, OCD, Anxiety Disorders, and Chronic Pain.

Will I see a therapist?

Yes, you will see a therapist on a one-to-one basis, via a video-conferencing platform. Virtual therapy means that you can meet face-to-face with a therapist, from the comfort of your own home. It is no different from seeing a therapist in person.

How many sessions will I need?

This will vary depending on the therapy goal and treatment plan. As a guide, this could be approximately 6-20 sessions. This will be clearer following the initial assessment.

What happens in a CBT session?

Sessions are 50-minutes long. At the outset of the session, an agenda will be agreed to give focus and a structure. The focus will be dependent upon what your treatment goals are, but will often centre on helping you to change your thought processes or how you respond to things.

What happens in an EMDR session?

EMDR is based on an 8 phase protocol. A detailed history is required, along with a lot of preparation work. Once this has been complete, an assessment of memory is required, before commencing the desensitisation phase. Following this, installation, body scan, close, and re-evaluation is completed.

Will I have to do any work in CBT?

As CBT is a skills-based therapy, there will be an expectation for you to practice the skills learned within treatment, between sessions. We will then review this at the start of each session. When facing your fears, this can be uncomfortable to begin with, but we will take things slowly and grade these tasks.

Will I have to do any work in EMDR?

EMDR does not require the same amount of inter-session work that CBT requires, but the processing of memories can still occur between sessions. This may cause a disturbance in thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, and you will be asked to keep a record of this

When do I pay for sessions?

Sessions are paid for, in full, 24-hours prior to the session. If sessions are cancelled with less than 48-hours notice, you will be charged the full fee. If you are late to a session, the full session must be paid for. Sessions can be paid for via credit/debit card, Paypal, or bank transfer.
